The Vancouver Canucks have traded one of their goaltenders. Roberto Luongo, right? Not quite. The Canucks have shipped Cory Schenider off to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for the 9th overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft. The Canucks then used their newly acquired pick for Bo Horvat.
Wait, what just happened?
It was long believed that Luongo would be the man leaving Canucks. However, due to his huge contract, Luongo proved difficult to move. The Canucks ended up moving Schneider, but did they get enough for a netminder many believe will be a star in the NHL?
No. No they didn't. No. No. No. The Canucks should have received more than one asset for a goalie that's capable of being a strong, reliable presence between the pipes.
Schneider has appeared in 98 games and has a 55-26-8 record. He owns a 2.20 GAA and a save percentage of .927. Those are some pretty impressive numbers, one which any team would be thrilled to own. The Canucks backed themselves into a corner with how they handled Roberto Luongo and their overall goaltending situation which forced them to accept a trade most fans will laugh at.
Essentially, this deal boils down to Schneider for Horvat. The Canucks will need Horvat to be a big contributor if they hope to avoid being labeled a big loser in this stunning trade.
